Political strife and wars have destabilized much of Africa's social and family environment. The results are extreme poverty, disease, child labor and violence. These problems have characterized Africa for a long time and will not go away on their own. We need to ensure that a sufficient investment is given to the development of African children so that the hopelessness felt by so many on the continent is eliminated. The key to guaranteeing a lasting change is to focus upon the African child as the center of all developmental programs. Within this emphasis we must devise new means to give significant emotional and psychological support to the children, parents, educators and other child caregivers.
There are several compelling reasons why these children need our efforts:
• To reach Africa we must reach out to children first to build now what will help foster a strong and healthy future for the continent of Africa. We need to encourage social responsibility since there is an absence of infrastructure for childcare services.
• Parent education programs are needed which will help parents change behavior in positive ways, and in the end will improve the quality of life for themselves and their children.
• There is a high demand from children, parents, educators and communities to equip African children with alternative solutions to real-life problems.
• There is a pressing need for effective programs to prevent child abuse and neglect which is a serious and widespread problem in Africa.
• There is an urgent need for emotional and psychological support to over 43 million children orphaned by HIV/AIDS and wars in sub Saharan Africa. Therefore, if we do not act now we face the prospect of losing a generation.
• The absence of quality early childhood care and better education needs to be improved.
